Drink for health? When the chosen drink is tea, it’s quite possible! Skeletal pain arising from aging-related conditions responds well
to muscle and joint boosters like those in green tea. Paramus Medical & Sports Rehabilitation Center offers
nutritional advice like drinking green tea to our Paramus
chiropractic patients.
AGING-RELATED SKELETAL, CARTILAGE, AND JOINT DISEASES
With aging come skeletal risks like disc height loss and changes
like the two joint and muscle diseases called osteoarthritis and sarcopenia. A recent
study described the interaction of height loss and vertebral
fractures in postmenopausal women. The researchers decided
that age rather than the height loss was suggested to be the better
way to determine risk of vertebral fracture. (1) Spinal osteoarthritis was linked with
stature loss in postmenopausal women, a condition documented
to reduce quality of life. (2) Cartilage is the victim
of the inflammatory and degenerative aspects of these diseases. Sarcopenia’s loss of strength and
muscle mass necessitates attention to quantity and quality
of skeletal muscle mass which is where where green tea comes
into play. Green tea has catechins that help maintain
healthy joints and skeletal muscle by reducing inflammatory
mediators. (3) Paramus Medical & Sports Rehabilitation Center believes you might enjoy
some beneficial green tea!
NUTRITIONAL BENEFITS
Green tea comes in a variety of
types. An additional recent article reports
that knee osteoarthritis patients were helped by a mixture
of curcuminoids, collagen and green tea extract which were shown to inhibit inflammation.
The researchers wrote that natural ingredients provide
a rational role in the care of osteoarthritis. (4) Another
natural option: spearmint tea! A report of how spearmint teas influenced
knee osteoarthritis found that a commercial spearmint tea improved
stiffness and physical disability while a spearmint tea brewed from a high-rosmarinic
acid (high-rosA) variety significantly decreased pain. (5) Rosmarinic
acid is taken from the woody, perennial herb, rosemary. it’s a polyphenolic compound with antioxidant properties. Polyphenols are reported to be
anti-cancer, anti-tumor cell proliferation, anti-apoptosis (cell death),
anti-metastasis, and anti-inflammatory. Rosmarinic acid is found in plant
species like the mint. (6) Paramus Medical & Sports Rehabilitation Center is on the hunt for
some high-rosA spearmint tea to enhance the Paramus chiropractic
treatment plan.
