Paramus Chiropractic Care May Better for Vertebral Fractures than Vertebroplasty

Paramus Medical & Sports Rehabilitation Center recommends curcumin for pain reduction and Paramus conservative care for vertebral fractures instead of vertebroplasty.

NO VERTEBROPLASTY FOR VERTEBRAL FRACTURE

Paramus Chiropractic Option for Conservative Care

Painful osteoporotic vertebral fractures occur in the vertebral bones of the spine. Often initiated by a fall or injury, a Paramus vertebral fracture (compression fracture) occurs when a vertebra – a bone of the spine - will dissolve on itself, resulting in the bone to shrink in size.  Researchers and doctors discovered a method to “fix” these vertebral fractures by inserting a cement type compound into the collapsed bone to get it to normal size again. This procedure is known as vertebroplasty. It made sense. However, a recent Cochrane Review study of results over numerous years show that high- to moderate-quality evidence reports no important benefit of vertebroplasty for acute or subacute osteoporotic vertebral fractures and warns of its potential for harm. Adverse side-effects from vertebroplasty include osteomyelitis, cord compression, thecal sac injury and respiratory failure. (1) How might chiropractic care conservatively manage a vertebral compression fracture? Consult Paramus Medical & Sports Rehabilitation Center. The suitable time after injury to include gentle Cox® Technic to the treatment plan for a vertebral fracture (generally around 6 weeks with careful tolerance testing) will be determined. In the interim, there are conservative options like bracing, good posture (with even a little extension), pain medications, etc., to ease the pain. Your Paramus chiropractor at Paramus Medical & Sports Rehabilitation Center is here to help!

Pain-relieving curcumin may be a good addition to the Paramus chiropractic treatment plan.

TIP OF THE MONTH: Try Curcumin!

Curcumin is a plant-derived natural compound from the rhizome of the turmeric (curcuma longa) plant. It is useful for treating and preventing a variety of diseases, especially age-associated ones like cardiovascular and neurodegenerative diseases, diabetes, hypertension, osteoporosis, rheumatoid arthritis, chronic inflammation and infection. (2) What an amazing polyphenol! It is even shown to be superior to corticosteroids for dropping inflammation and to be beneficial alone and/or in combination with antibiotics for being antibacterial. (3,4) With so many amazing benefits, curcumin may be a good supplement to your nutrition routine. Let’s talk about it at your next Paramus chiropractic appointment at Paramus Medical & Sports Rehabilitation Center!
